Friends House provides permanent housing for 50 men and women living with AIDS. Located in a beautiful 28,000-square-foot building in midtown Manhattan, Friends House opened its doors in 1997. Each Friends House resident has an efficiency apartment with a bath and kitchenette, and shares communal areas that include lounges, a library, and a computer lab. Meals are provided daily in the dining room, which is also used as a meeting room and gathering place for community activities.
Current residents range in age from 28 to 61, with most in their 40s and 50s. Residents are referred to Friends House through HASA (New York City's HIV/AIDS Services Administration). There are seven women at Friends House, more than there have ever been before, which is reflective of the changing demographics of the population of people living with AIDS. More than half of the current resident population is in recovery from drug or alcohol addictions.

Residents are all low-income and contribute a portion of their public benefits toward rental payments.
